#112 Ali'i - Royalty
I encountered this beautiful pair of Nene (Hawaiian Geese) up near the volcano on the Big Island. Unimpressed by my presence, they were regal, imposing and gave the impression that they were not to be trifled with. They had the bearing of true royalty, and thus the title “Ali’i”. I have been experimenting lately with how to depict the “mana” or spiritual essence of Hawaiian wildlife. I struggled to find a way to show the Nene’s deep connection to the culture and the environment. In this painting I decided to have their “mana” shine back at them in their reflection as a Polynesian pattern beneath them in the pond water.
