The Nene, (Hawaiian goose) is the world's rarest goose. Endemic to Hawaii, this majestic creature is the Hawaii state bird. They have longer legs and less webbed feet than other geese, better adapting them to walk on Hawaii’s rough, volcanic terrain. Once critically endangered, they numbered as few as 30 individuals in the 1960’s. Today, thanks to careful conservation, there is a population of several thousand in the wild. The Nene mate for life and are quite protective of their mates and young.
